TNC Engages Fairview Hospital’s Nurses in Diet Education

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Dietitian Erika Tilley conducted a presentation for nursing staff at Fairview Hospital on May 24 and June 2. Erika works part-time at Fairview Hospital providing in-patient nutrition care as well as Diabetes education and support. Upon nursing staff’s request, Erika provided nutrition education on the diets that should—from a health standpoint—accompany the disease states that are most frequently seen at Fairview Hospital. Nurses engaged in a discussion of Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia and key dietary information that goes along with these disease states. Coumadin, also known as warfarin, a medication with nutritional implications that is commonly used at Fairview Hospital, was also highlighted in the discussion. Erika’s presentation was well-received by nursing staff and has helped to familiarize them with what a dietitian would likely impart to a patient. Nurses at Fairview Hospital are now better equipped to reinforce diet education that has been provided by dietitians, if necessary. It is this communication and transfer of information between health professionals that is crucial in the improvement of patient care and satisfaction.
